Russia's Syria airstrikes 'good thing': Del Ponte

  • At least nine civilians and 16 militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party have been killed as Turkish security forces press ahead with a crackdown in mainly Kurdish southeastern regions. Ten of the militants died in the city of Jizre and six in the district of Sur in Diyarbakir province.
  • The Turkish president reportedly warned the European Union in November of letting refugees pour into Europe if the bloc didn’t offer Ankara a better deal. According to the Greek website euro-today, the demand was made during a meeting between Rejep Tayyip Erdogan and EU officials Jean-Claude Yoonker and Donald Toosk.
  • French investigators are set to probe new allegations of sexual abuse of young children in the Central African Republic. A sister and brother made the allegations to UN investigators, saying they were forced to perform sex acts for French soldiers in exchange for water and biscuits in 2014.
