Bomb threat diverts airliner shortly after US departure

A suspected bomb on board a Turkish Airlines passenger jet has forced it to change its flight path and land in Ireland, after taking off from an airport in the US state of Texas.

The Boeing 777-300 jet was flying 227 passengers and crew from Houston, Texas, to Turkey’s most populous city of Istanbul on Sunday, when a written note was discovered on board.

The crew immediately contacted their operations center which in turn alerted Irish authorities to arrange an emergency landing in Ireland’s Shannon Airport.

The flight then safely landed at the airport, after dumping its fuel over the Atlantic to ensure optimal landing weight.

According to aviation news website Airlive.net, the jet was taken to a bomb scare area in a remote part of the airport and all passengers disembarked.

A suspected package was found on board the aircraft after further inspections, Airlive.net added.

This is while in November, another Turkish Airlines commercial jet with 256 people on board was forced to change direction and land in Canada’s Halifax Stanfield International Airport after receiving a bomb threat.

That flight was also headed to Istanbul after taking off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Also in November, Flight 65, en route from Los Angeles to the French capital, Paris, was diverted to Salt Lake City in the state of Utah after a bomb threat was reported from the ground, a US government official said.

The bomb threats came on the heels of a series of coordinated attacks in Paris that killed over 130 people on November 13. 2015. The Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the carnage.
