Famous Romantic paintings restored in Germany

Caspar David Friedrich's painting (1809-10) based on the ruins of Eldena Abbey.

Germany is exhibiting two famous paintings from the Romanticism era after three years of restoration work.

The paintings which are works of German artists Friedrich are expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Old National Gallery in Berlin.

Experts say the paintings most likely drew inspiration from the Baltic Sea. For decades, the paintings were largely forgotten and neglected, before rising to prominence at the beginning of the 20th century. They were removed from National gallery in 20-13 to undergo extensive analysis.

Restoration work was funded by private foundations. Some troublesome parts of the paintings were removed, after much debate and discussion.

The paintings will now form part of a permanent exhibition along with two copies of the paintings before restoration. It means visitors can then see for themselves the difference restoration can make.
