Biden says he regrets not running for president 'every day'

US Vice President Joe Biden says he regrets his decision of not running for president in 2016 “every day.”

“I regret it every day but it was the right decision for my family and for me and I plan on staying deeply involved,” Biden said on Wednesday in an interview with Hartford, Conn., NBC affiliate WVIT.

During last year, Biden, whose son Beau died from brain cancer, had been trying to assess whether he has the “emotional fuel” to run for president.

Finally, in October, Biden decided not to enter the US presidential race after concluding he couldn’t win the White House in 2016.

Biden said it took a long time for his family to decide if he should run after the death of his son, Beau, who died from brain cancer in May.

Biden’s wife, Jill, said she was disappointed her husband decided not to seek the Democratic nomination. “I believed he would’ve been the best president,” she said.

In a December interview with Bloomberg, the 72-year-old politician said it “was the right decision,” saying he was still trying to cope with the death of his son.

“I believed I could win, but that's not enough. I know myself. And I know it takes time,” he said.

Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton is competing against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I) and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D), for the Democratic Party's nomination.

Only Sanders is considered at all competitive in the early primaries, even as he operates with far less money than the former secretary of state.

Biden has not yet endorsed any candidate in the Democratic presidential primary.

He didn’t indicate on Wednesday he was going to back a candidate soon. “We’ve got two good candidates,” he said, apparently referring to Clinton and Sanders, and omitting O’Malley.
