Spanish police seize 3 tonnes of cocaine

Spain's national police seize over three tons of cocaine in the northern region of Galicia.

Spain's national police have seized over three tonnes of cocaine in the northern region of Galicia and nabbed over a dozen of suspected drug smugglers of different nationalities.

Spain's special operations forces stopped a van which was transporting over 1,500 pounds of cocaine from Galicia toward Málaga in the region of Costa Del Sol in the south of the country.

The rest was found in a warehouse in Spain's northwestern city of Pontevedra.

"National Police agents have broken up a major international drug trafficking organization dedicated to maritime transport of cocaine from South America to Europe," the police said in a statement.

They said the operation represents "the largest drug seizure in Galicia since 1999.”

At least eight Britons, two Dutch citizens and two Spaniards were arrested in the anti-drug operation.

More than €1.2 million ($1.3 million), a 9mm Parabellum pistol, four cars, a van and a motorcycle were also confiscated.

Galicia, a coastal region, has long been used by drug traffickers for carrying narcotics to Europe.
