Maersk interested in investing in Iran’s offshore projects

Denmark's Maersk has voiced interest in investing in Iran's offshore oil projects as well as the country's transportation industry.

Iranian officials said on Tuesday that Maersk – better known in the country as a transportation conglomerate – has expressed interest in the development of the country’s oil prospects.

Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh told reporters that Maersk wants to develop Iran’s deepwater hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian Sea.

However, he said Iran wants the company to get involved in South Pars Oil Layer – a key oil project located inside South Pars natural gas reserves in the Persian Gulf.

Zangeneh made the remarks after meeting Denmark’s Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen who was visiting Tehran heading a major trade delegation that included representatives from Maersk.

Also, Mohammad Saeidi, the managing director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), told reporters in a separate occasion that Maersk is interested in major offshore jobs in Iran’s oil industry.

“Maersk has announced readiness to take up projects in the offshore sector of Iran’s oil industry after the removal of the sanctions against the country,” Saeidi said.

The official added that it will be upon the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) to study Maersk’s proposal to cooperate with Iran in the area of the oil industry.

Saeidi further emphasized that Iran is ready to jointly work with the Danish company in the transportation sector, stressing that the IRISL has proposed to jointly set up shipping international lines with Maersk after the sanctions against Iran are lifted.

Officials in Tehran have already said they are expecting for the removal of anti-Iran sanctions to take place within the next weeks.

This follows a landmark deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany – back in July 2015.

Based on the deal, Iran will restrict certain aspects of its nuclear energy activities in return for the removal of certain economic sanctions against the country.
