Extra armed forces deployed in London on New Year’s Eve

London attracts hundreds of thousands of people on New Year's Eve

Security has been beefed up across the UK as millions of people are set to take part in official New Year’s Eve celebrations.

British police chiefs deployed extra armed officers to the streets of the capital London, the scene of the UK’s largest New Year parties. The Metropolitan police said officers on duty would carry out searches at a fireworks display staged by London’s mayor.

Armed security guards have also been deployed at tube and train stations across the capital. Officials say that extra visible patrols are meant to deter any terror plots and reassure the public about their safety.

Police patrols increased at sensitive locations in London.

Ahead of the New Year celebrations, security warnings were issued around the world with many western countries found cancelling or curtailing their annual events.

There have been concerns across Europe and the US that terrorists could target public gatherings and transport, including in Paris, California and Egypt.

New Year fireworks display and festivities attract nearly 100,000 people in Brussels. But celebrations were cancelled this year over fears of terrorist attacks. Earlier on Thursday, Belgian police detained six people during house searches in Brussels in an investigation into an alleged plot to carry out an attack in the city.
