A zoo in the UK is trying to save the world's rarest green magpie from extinction.

The Javan green magpie is one of the world’s most endangered subspecies of birds. It's believed that fewer than 100 individual birds are left in the wild in their native forests of Indonesia.

Four pairs of these colorful birds have been brought to Chester Zoo all the way from Indonesia.

That's part of the zoo's first breeding program for these short-tailed birds in Europe.

The birds spent six weeks in quarantine, after which they were released into large outdoor aviaries for the first time.

These birds had lived in tiny cages in Indonesia until they were rescued. And, they had never known what it's like to fly around freely until today.

The zoo’s experts hope that one day, this beautiful bunch can be returned to the wild.
