US Embassy in Turkey issues security alert

The US Embassy in Ankara, Turkey

The US Embassy in Turkey says it would limit consular services until Wednesday due to a possible security threat.

The embassy in Ankara urged American citizens on Monday to avoid the area and for Americans in the country to maintain a "high level of vigilance."

A brief security statement posted on the embassy's website did not specify the nature of the potential threat.

Last week, the US Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, had cancelled consular services for a day, citing information about a possible security threat.

Two massive suicide bombings blamed on a local Daesh (ISIL) terror cell killed a total of 130 people in Ankara in October and near a town on the Syrian border in July.

Turkey has been repeatedly accused of being one of the main supporters of the Daesh terror group operating in Syria, with reports saying that Ankara actively trains and arms the Takfiri militants there and facilitates their safe passage into the neighboring country.

Since the beginning of the foreign-backed militancy in Syria in March 2011, an assortment of armed terrorist groups, including Daesh, have been fighting to topple the government in Damascus.
