Press TV has conducted an interview with Nader Bagherzadeh, a political commentator from Irvine, to discuss a final assessment released earlier by the International Atomic Energy agency (IAEA) on Iran’s past nuclear activities.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: How do you react to this news of this IAEA report?
Bagherzadeh: The discussion that was going on before Mr. Amano’s report was, from Iran, that it has to close the file, the PMD (so-called possible military dimensions) file. I have not completely…[read] the report, but the summary and the last sentence of the conclusion says basically everything is closed, there will be no further discussion on the PMD and that is exactly what the Iranian Leadership [Ayatollah Khamenei] wanted to see before proceeding according to the nine-point letter that came from the Leadership to Mr. President [Hassan Rouhani] and others. One of the points was that the PMD has to be closed before Arak [heavy water nuclear plant] revamping will go forward and the additional fuels of enriched to 5 percent, 3 percent will be shipped out of the country. So that hurdle has been met. Although, maybe in the beginning of the report, he [Yukia Amano] does talk about these other things that happened perhaps in 2003, that is what he claims at least.
But this is an ex-hurdle, we expect one more report from Mr. Amano and that is completion of the agreement from the Iran’s side sometime in January from what I have heard; Mr. Araqchi has said. That time the sanctions will be fully removed from the European side on the nuclear issue.
Press TV: How do you feel about the US statement and the State Department saying that “Iran has adequately met its conditions”?
Bagherzadeh: It is absolutely in synch with Mr. Amano [’s report]. I can tell you that if the will and support of western countries was not in place, Mr. Amano would not have given such a solid conclusion to this PMD. So from the outset the P5+1 and particularly the Western countries and specifically the United States wanted this hurdle to be overcome by Mr. Amano. I think he has done a good job; he did not leave it in the gray area…
So this is done. We have to move forward to his second and last major report, and I think things will go in the right place because Iran has stated removing idle centrifuges and the contracts for Arak have been signed, according to Mr. Araqchi, and I believe that next two months are going to be really busy on the Iranian side to get close to what the agreement said.
