Jonathan Pollard, an Israeli spy who had been imprisoned in a US jail, has been released, according to a statement by the office of the Israeli prime minister.
Pollard was arrested in 1985 for selling classified US documents to Israel while working as a civilian intelligence analyst for the American Navy. He was given a life sentence two years later.
The 61-year-old was freed on parole Friday after three decades in a US federal prison.
The former US Navy intelligence officer had been serving a life sentence in the Butner prison in North Carolina.
Under the terms of Pollard’s parole, he must remain in the US between two and five years.
US-born Pollard was granted Israeli “citizenship” 20 years ago, years after his conviction on one count of espionage against the United States.
