Hackers who breached the CIA director’s email account last month are now suspected of intruding an FBI-run law enforcement portal and a private email account of a senior bureau official.
The self-described teenagers, who call themselves Crackas With Attitude, posted Friday personal information of FBI officials that appears to have been taken from the bureau’s Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal, CNN reported.
Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies from across the US use the portal to share information about ongoing and sealed cases.
Law enforcement users of the site, also known as LEO.gov, received notices that their personal data might have been compromised, according to CNN.
The hackers said they found a vulnerability in the information-sharing portal, allowing them to gain access to names, email addresses and phone numbers of about 3,000 government employees.
FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty would neither confirm nor deny the hacking attack to CNN. “We have no comment on specific claims of hacktivism, but those who engage in such activities are breaking the law.”
However, she said the FBI “takes these matters very seriously.”
The breach happened after the CWA hackers posted screenshots on its Twitter account Thursday which appear to have come from a private email account belonging to FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano and his wife.
Three law enforcement officials told CNN that the hackers are the ones who gained access to CIA Director John Brennan’s email account last month.
Following the hack, the whistleblower website WikiLeaks published a data dump from Brennan's personal email.
The data included social security numbers, government phone numbers, and draft recommendations about CIA interrogation methods.
