US health officials have traced more Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections to the chain restaurant Chipotle.

Officials announced Tuesday that the Mexican-themed restaurant is now responsible for 35 infections, which shows a significant rise from the previous 22 confirmed cases.

A dozen of the 35 confirmed cases involving Chipotle were in Oregon and the rest were in Washington, officials said.

This is while two new E. coli victims said they have not eaten at Chipotle prior to falling ill.

The current outbreak has resulted in 12 hospitalizations but no deaths have been reported so far.

The number of infections is expected to grow as more diners become aware of the outburst.

Washington health officials were interviewing an additional 25 people who became ill, said Dr. Kathy Lofy, Washington State’s top medical officer said Monday.

Earlier in the week, Chipotle, which is struggling with its third food safety incident this year, closed 43 restaurants located in Washington and Oregon because of the outbreak.

According to officials, so far 8 restaurants have been tied to the outbreak. The company on Tuesday said it is deep-cleaning and fully sanitizing the shuttered restaurants and will dispose of all the food in them.

The restaurant said it is testing the food in its restaurants and distribution centers, and has hired two food safety consulting firms to assess and improve its health standards.

In August, the chain faced a salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated tomatoes that infected dozens of people in Minnesota. A short while later, health workers said nearly 100 customers and employees were infected with norovirus at a Chipotle restaurant in Simi Valley, California.
