US Navy finds wreckage believed to be missing cargo ship El Faro

The El Faro disappeared during a fierce hurricane on October 1, 2015.

A US Navy search team has found the wreckage of a cargo ship believed to be the El Faro in about 15,000 feet of water, authorities say.

The El Faro disappeared near the Bahamas while en route from Jacksonville, Florida, to Puerto Rico on October 1 during Hurricane Joaquin, a sinking that most certainly claimed the lives of its all 33 crew members.

"The target identified by Orion (side-scan radar) is consistent with a 790-foot cargo ship, which from sonar images appears to be in an upright position and in one piece," the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a statement on Saturday night.

The NTSB statement said officials planned to send a remotely-operated vehicle called CURV 21 to confirm the identity of the wreckage on Sunday.

The El Faro never reached to Puerto Rico after it left Jacksonville. The 40-year-old ship is believed to have sunk some 35 miles northeast of Crooked Island in the Bahamas.
