Iran urges UNSC structural reforms through international dialogue

Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani

Iran has reaffirmed the need for genuine reforms in the structure of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), saying international negotiations are the key to the body’s structural reforms.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that international dialogue within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly is the only proper bedrock for discussing reforms of the Security Council,” Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani said in an address to the UN General Assembly session in New York on Friday.

He added that all UN member states need to participate in such negotiations and expressed Iran’s readiness for cooperation with other sides in this regard.

The Iranian envoy blamed the UNSC’s current structure for the body’s failure to fulfill its role to maintain international peace and security.

“[Introducing] reforms in the council’s structure needs all-out unity among all the body’s member states,” Dehqani said.

He added that the Security Council is not a real representative of all UN members, stressing the world today needs a more effective, responsible and transparent Security Council which could truly reflect the stances of all the UN member states.

Dehqani said previous attempts to change the make-up or improve the modus operandi of the council have failed due to the lack of trust in the body.

He emphasized that any move to implement reforms in the council should be based on a consensus among all the UN members and their genuine political will.

The Iranian ambassador warned that lack of prudence and hasty moves in enacting reforms in the Security Council could seriously influence the international body’s performance.
