Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina has accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of lying to Americans during her 11-hour Benghazi hearing marathon.

“I think anyone who listened to those Benghazi hearings realizes that she knew this was a terrorist attack in Benghazi and she nevertheless lied to the American people about it,” Fiorina told New York’s AM-970 radio Sunday.

Clinton appeared before a congressional committee on Thursday to testify about the attack against the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that occurred in 2012 and left four US diplomats, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, dead.

She accepted responsibility for the attacks but accused the Republican Party of playing politics over it.

Fiorina also said the former first lady is focusing on her gender on the campaign trail to make headway towards the White House.

“I think it’s worth remembering, though, that Hillary Clinton is running on a platform of being the first woman president. That is her platform,” she said.

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO described herself as the best candidate to take on Clinton.

“If I am our nominee, I will force her to have to run on her track record, or lack thereof,”  Fiorina said. “She’ll have to run on her policy. She’ll have to run on her mistakes, for which I am prepared to hold her to account.”

“And if we can force her to play on that ground, then we can win,” she added.

Speaking about her own performance in the Republican field, Fiorina said she was “pleased” with her progress, but acknowledged that she still needed to make herself known to those who don’t know her, which she said were 40 percent of the voters.

According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll published on Wednesday, Fiorina is having a hard time keeping up with GOP heavyweights such as the real estate mogul Donald Trump and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Only 6 percent of the participants thought of Fiorina as the strongest leader in the pack. She did even worse in the “best chance” category, with only 3 percent of the voters saying she is more likely than others to succeed President Barack Obama.
