Police: Couple beat son to death in New York church
A US couple has been charged with beating their 19-year-old son to death inside a church in the state of New York, according to police.
Lucas Leonard died of blunt force trauma to his body after being violently attacked inside the Word of Life Church in New Hartford, New York, police said on Tuesday.
Bruce Leonard, 65, and Deborah Leonard, 59, of Clayville, were arraigned on manslaughter charges and pleaded not guilty, according to Lt. Timothy O'Neill of the New Hartford Police Department.
O'Neill said the young man died on Monday.
And four fellow church members were accused of assaulting Leonard's 17-year-old brother and severely injuring him, O'Neill said.
The second victim was in critical condition at a local hospital, a press release said.
"Several church members were interviewed throughout the day and night, and several children were secured from the church and turned over to Oneida County Child Protective Services," it said.
Police have not released a motive for the violent assault.
Both teenagers suffered injuries to their abdomens, genitals, backs and thighs. The six church members were sent to Oneida County Jail after they were charged.
