Saudis covering up death toll of Hajj crush: Pundit

Press TV has interviewed Kevin Barrett, editor of the Veterans Today from Madison, and Mohammed Shafiq, with the Ramadan Foundation from Manchester, to discuss the Saudis’ inaction to shed light on the Mina stampede of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

Barrett says Saudi authorities are “masters of lying” about facts especially concerning the Hajj incidents, noting that the Mina crush seems to be a “terrible shame for the Saudis,” because Riyadh is trying to cover up the exact numbers of victims after the deadly stampede.

The Saudis are not coming clean about realities behind the catastrophe in Mina, he maintains, adding that this behavior has its roots in their “culture of secrecy and hypocrisy.”

There has been the possibility of a quarrel among the Saudi ruling elites on power sharing that prevented them from shouldering responsibility in the face of the crush during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, he argues.

He further called for the establishment of an international commission of competent Muslims to take charge of the most important ritual in Islam.

Shafiq, for his part, believes Saudi Arabia has broken its promises of making a thorough investigation into the Hajj crush in Mina. He adds that Iran, Pakistan and other Muslim nations have the right to be informed of the real cause behind the human tragedy.
