Press TV has conducted an interview with Paul Larudee, co-founder of the Free Palestine Movement from Berkeley, to get his take on Israel’s policy of kidnapping Palestinians.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Should we be surprised that this effort to kidnap Palestinians is increasing in intensity?
Larudee: Exactly, and your question anticipates its answer, which is no we should be surprised. The Israeli strategy has always been essentially, let me call it “Boiling the Frog,” the story goes that if you put a frog in cold water in a pan and then put it on the stove and heat it up to boiling, the frog will not notice the difference in temperature until it’s already boiled. And it will remain in there and won’t jump out. So, what’s happening with Jerusalem (al-Quds) and with West Bank and all of this is that Israel is escalating, it is taking children, it’s torturing children and it’s increasing the number of kidnappings that it does against Palestinians as in the case of al-Aqsa. It will pressure al-Aqsa, it will encroach upon al-Aqsa. Ultimately, it will try to destroy al-Aqsa and it will do this incrementally to see if there is any reaction worldwide and if there isn’t enough reaction, if they can’t be stopped, they will continue. This is the way they work.
Press TV: You’ve been a pro-Palestine activist for significant number of years, I’m wondering, what is your take on the future, because you know, we had Mahmoud Abbas at the United Nations saying that Palestine would not abide by any of the accords that it has signed with Israel. Do you think, things are about to get worse or better?
Larudee: If anything significant happens, I don’t think it will be because of the actions of the Palestinian Authority, it will be by the actions of the people themselves. What I’m talking about is an Intifada of significant proportions beyond anything that we’ve seen in the past that makes the occupation and the denial of Palestinian rights intolerable for Israel. And I think we’re very close to that point, where Palestinians will do this, I heard this from Palestinians themselves who are feeling it. But the key thing is and I think that the people in the world will join them. If there is a very powerful Intifada that encompasses as many of the Palestinian people as possible in resisting Israel, but of course that’s not our choice that’s the choice of Palestinians and no one can blame them if they chose not to take those risks.
