The Russian deputy foreign minister says an international contact group on the situation in Syria could start its work next month.
Mikhail Bogdanov said Monday that the contact group comprising Russia, Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt could meet in October in a bid to help find a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
“Four intra-Syrian groups should be formed in Geneva [in Switzerland] and a meeting of the contract group from the most influential foreign players should be moved to October after the UN General Assembly session I believe,” Bogdanov said.
The Russian diplomat stressed that a meeting should be held as soon as possible although the level of the meeting has not yet been determined.
He also said that a new round of talks between Syrian groups may be held in the Russian capital, Moscow, by the end of the year.
“[A meeting] is possible, of course. It’s so far too early to speak of concrete dates because we’re not doing this for ourselves, but for the Syrians. If the Syrians have a desire to talk in Moscow, then we are always ready to give them a venue for such meetings,” he said.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011 with reports saying more than 250,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
The United Nations says the militancy has displaced more than 7.6 million Syrians internally, and over four million others have fled the country to take refuge in neighboring states, including Jordan and Lebanon.
A report published by The New York Times says some 30,000 militants from over 100 countries, including more than 250 Americans, have traveled to Syria and Iraq since 2011.
