British Muslims have called for an inquiry into recent deadly stampede in the holy city of Mecca.
Islamic Society of Britain Director Khalid Anis said it was a tragedy that “people are allowed to die on something which should be spiritual and peaceful.”
He also called for further investigation into how the stampede was allowed to happen and emphasized the role Saudi Arabia must play.
The stampede was the worst to have occurred during the Hajj pilgrimage in 25 years. Reports say nearly two thousand people have lost their lives. However, Saudi officials haven't increased the 717 death toll announced on Thursday. Pilgrims from many countries are among the victims.
“Obviously we all want answers. We all need to know why this happened. There just needs to be a clear, transparent analysis of what went wrong,” Anis said.
He then urged UK government to push the Saudis to hold the inquiry and make sure that it’s open and transparent.
Saudi Arabia is facing growing criticism over the catastrophe, with critics questioning its ability to manage the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
