Russia has expressed optimism over the growing chances for a concerted effort in resolving the Syrian crisis and on fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in the Middle East, according to a diplomatic source.

“We are optimistic over the possibilities for joining efforts in the fight against the Islamic State and on the Syrian settlement,” the source in the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The development comes a day after UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura said he had met with facilitators appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to head working groups tasked with resolving the five-year conflict in Syria.

“The Working Groups are intended to provide Syrians with a platform to address in-depth themes that are certainly not new, but have lacked to date sustained intra-Syrian discussion,” De Mistura said.

De Mistura first brought up the concept of working groups in July, stating they could help reach a “Syrian-owned framework document.”The initiative calls for consultations and discussions with Syrian parties.

The UN envoy expressed hope that the outcomes of the working groups “could eventually set the stage for a Syrian agreement to end the conflict.”

Meanwhile, Syria’s forces continue their military operations against the foreign-backed Takfiri Daesh militants, who have been wreaking havoc in the country.

On Tuesday, Syrian warplanes launched a series of airstrikes against the positions of the terrorist group in the ancient city of Palmyra, in the country's central province of Homs, killing over three dozen terrorists and injuring many more.

The aerial attacks came only four days after Syrian army jets carried out at least 25 airstrikes on terrorist positions in the Daesh-held city.

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria has reportedly claimed about 250,000 lives since March 2011.

The United Nations says the militancy has displaced more than 7.6 million Syrians internally, and over four million others have fled the country to take refuge in neighboring states, including Jordan and Lebanon.
