First group of Syrian refugees to arrive in Britain soon

Syrian refugees and migrants

The first group of Syrian refugees to be resettled in Britain is set to arrive in the country in the coming days, said UK Home Secretary Theresa May.

May said in a statement that many refugees had been through “heart shattering” experiences and seen loved ones die.

"I know that honourable members and the general public are keen to know more detail on the numbers and when people are expected to arrive,” she said.

May refused to say how many refugees would arrive in the first wave but media reports suggest that the government is aiming to take about 400 people per month.

The UK has pledged to take up to 20,000 refugees over the next five years. Critics are urging the government to take more refugees.

The Conservative government has announced that it will only take refugees from UN camps on the border with Syria, rather than taking part in a proposed EU-wide resettlement scheme for refugees who have already arrived in Europe.
