Helicopter crash kills six people in Russia’s Khabarovsk
At least six people have lost their lives in a transport helicopter crash in Russia’s far-eastern Khabarovsk region.
The Mil Mi-8 copter with 13 passengers and three crew members on board fell in the Sea of Okhotsk on Saturday afternoon, an official with the Russian emergencies ministry said.
The helicopter crew did not communicate with air traffic control tower at the expected time; therefore, a search and rescue mission was launched for the copter.
The official noted that the captain later used a satellite phone “to report that six people were killed and ten others survived the crash," adding that the survivors managed to get to the shore on their own.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
The passengers were top executives from Khabarovsk, who intended to travel to the Shantar Islands off the western shore of the Sea of Okhotsk.
The Mil Mi-8 is widely used to carry people and cargo to far-flung areas of Russia.
The country has witnessed a number of aviation accidents in recent weeks.
On August 9, a midair collision between a helicopter and a seaplane over the Istrinskoye Reservoir near the Russian capital Moscow claimed the lives of nine people.
A week earlier, a military helicopter crashed during an air show in central Russia, killing one of its pilots and injuring another.
Moreover, a Sukhoi Su-24M plane went down in Khabarovsk on July 6, leaving both pilots dead.
