Three people have lost their lives when a regional train slammed into a car at a level crossing in France’s northwestern region of Normandy.

The three victims were in the car “which seems to have stopped in the middle of the tracks,” at Conde-sur-Huisne in the Orne region of Lower Normandy, before being hit by a Paris-bound train at 8:22 pm (1822 GMT) on Friday, deputy prefect Pascal Vion told AFP.

The ill-fated car was “dragged burning for several hundred meters” along the track after the collision, Vion added.

The sole survivor of the car was “a woman of a certain age” who managed to escape from the vehicle before it was hit by the train.

Of the 34 passengers on the train, travelling from the city of Le Mans to the French capital, none were hurt.
