Democrats want apology from Huckabee for Israel ‘oven’ remarks

Republican presidential canidate Mike Huckabee

US Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has called on Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee to make an apology over his “grossly irresponsible statement.”

In an interview with a conservative website on Saturday, Huckabee lashed out at President Barack Obama for concluding nuclear negotiations with Iran, saying the US president was marching Israelis "to the door of the oven.”

"This president's foreign policy is the most feckless in American history," Huckabee told Breitbart News. "It is so naive that he would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven."

Wasserman Schultz on Sunday said he should apologize to “the Jewish community and to the American people for this grossly irresponsible statement."

She said his "cavalier analogies to the Holocaust are unacceptable” and his rhetoric "has no place in American politics."

After more than two weeks of marathon talks, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany – announced the conclusion of nuclear negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on July 14.

Most Republicans oppose the nuclear agreement with Iran, but they need a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress to override a possible presidential veto and to reach that threshold, Republicans need Democratic support.

"This is the most idiotic thing, this Iran deal. It should be rejected by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress and by the American people. I read the whole deal. We gave away the whole store. It’s got to be stopped," Huckabee said.

According to CNN/ORC poll that was released on Sunday, Huckabee is in 7th place with the support of 5 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters.
