Republican Senator and presidential candidate Lindsey Graham says he believes there is a market in the United States for people like Donald Trump who say "outrageous" things.
In an interview with ABC on Sunday, Graham accused Trump, frontrunner for the Republican Party nomination, of "appealing to the dark side of American politics."
"I would ask the Republican Party to understand why most major companies are firing Mr. Trump, and I don't think we should hire him," Graham said.
"I think he's appealing to the dark side of American politics. He is not offering solutions to hard, complicated problems. He is basically selling fear and prejudice," he added.
Trump moved to the top of the 2016 Republican nomination for the US presidential candidate in a new CNN poll released on Sunday.
Trump surged into the lead in the race for the White House, despite a series of recent controversial statements.
The 69-year-old has sparked a controversy by denouncing the military record of Republican Senator John McCain. He has also come under severe criticism for his inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants in the US, calling them drug dealers and “rapists.”
Last week, Trump announced the personal cell-phone number of Graham at a rally. Trump said on Wednesday that he had no regrets about it. “I did it for fun, and everybody had a good time.”
Graham said on Sunday he had got a new iPhone thanks to Trump and called him a "jackass."
"If you say most illegal immigrants are drug dealers and rapists, there are people that want to believe that," Graham said. "He's appealing to fear and prejudice. And there's a market for that."
The South Carolina senator said that Trump is "bankrupt" when it comes to being qualified to be commander-in-chief of the United States.
"I don't think Mr. Trump is qualified to be commander-in-chief, I think he is bankrupt when it comes to all the qualities you need to lead the men and women in uniform and to lead a great nation," he said.
