Tunis has arrested 127 suspected terrorists following last month’s killing of 37 people, mostly foreign tourists, at a beach resort near Sousse.
“Since the attack, the security forces have carried out more than 700 operations resulting in the arrests of 127 suspected members of terrorist gangs,” said Kamel Jendoubi, the government minister heading the crisis group on the incident, said on Saturday.
The June 26 shooting at Port El Kantaoui near Sousse left 30 Britons, three Irish nationals, two Germans, one Belgian, one Portuguese and a Russian dead.
Jendoubi did not specify how many of the arrested suspects were linked to the beach shooting rampage.
Early this month, Jendoubi had announced the arrest of eight suspects, including a woman, with direct links to the massacre, adding that their investigations had led to the discovery of a “network behind the operation in Sousse.”
The minister stressed that Tunis is determined to protect “the country, its citizens and nationals of foreign countries.”
“Today, more than 100,000 police, national guard and civil protection officers in addition to the army” have been deployed, Jendoubi assured.
He added that around 3,000 security guards are protecting beaches, hotels and archaeological sites in the country.
Meanwhile, London has strongly advised British vacationers against unnecessary trips to Tunisia. Denmark has done the same, urging its national to stop visits to the African country.
The Port El Kantaoui attack was the second attack against foreign tourists in Tunisia in just over three months.
In March, 21 tourists and a policeman were killed at the National Bardo Museum in Tunis by gunmen.
Both attacks were claimed by the Takfiri ISIL terrorist group.
