Palestinian prisoner's life in danger in Israel: ICRC
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC ) has warned about the deteriorating health of a Palestinian activist who is on hunger strike in an Israeli jail.
"We are concerned that his life is at immediate risk," Jacques de Maio, the head of the ICRC delegation, said in a statement about 36-year-old Khader Adnan, who has been on hunger strike for nearly 50 days.
"Any solution must, however, take into account the necessity of protecting the detainee's moral and physical integrity," De Maio said.
De Maio said Adnan's family should be allowed to visit him urgently.
"His family is anxious about his health... We urgently request the Israeli authorities to allow them to visit him. It is more than two months since he was granted a family visit," he said.
Adnan was abducted in July 2014 and has since been held under the so-called administrative detention.
Adnan observed a 66-day hunger strike when he was also detained in 2012, sparking a weeks-long hunger strike by hundreds of fellow Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli forces routinely abduct Palestinians across the occupied territories and put them behind bars based on administrative detention policy, which allows the regime to imprison Palestinians for up to six months without trial or charge and the detention order can be renewed indefinitely.
Last week, the Israeli Cabinet endorsed a bill that would allow the force-feeding of Palestinian detainees.
The Israeli rights group B'Tselem said in a 41-page report on Monday that thousands of Palestinians are prosecuted by Israeli military courts each year without substantial evidence. The group also noted that the Israeli judicial process against Palestinians had been reduced to a "hollow formality."
Palestinian officials and independent sources say more than 7,000 Palestinians, many of them without charge or trial, are reportedly held in at least 17 Israeli prisons.
