US Secretary of State John Kerry has accused the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad of using chemical weapons against civilians, saying he is "absolutely certain" about the matter.
Kerry told reporters via a video conference from Boston that he was "absolutely certain” that Assad had used chlorine gas to orchestrate a chemical attack on its people.
"We are certain that the preponderance of those attacks have been carried out by the regime, and we're putting together a portfolio of that data that supports that even as we speak now," Kerry said.
"I think everybody's patience is wearing thin with respect to the extraordinary depravity of the weaponry and mechanisms for delivery, which Assad has used against his own people," he added.
"Thus far, it has not been stopped, and I think it is only increasing the international community's anger at the Assad regime," said the top US diplomat.
The United States has long been accusing Damascus of using chemicals against the Syrian people.
Damascus has repeatedly rejected the allegations. It had already surrendered its stockpiles of chemical weapons to a joint mission led by the United Nations and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which oversaw the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons.
Kerry said late last year that the United States had “removed and destroyed” all Syrian chemical weapons that were declared by Damascus.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the United States and its regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
