Obama’s rule against coal-fired power plants to hurt manatees: GOP

In their latest attack on the Obama administration, Republican lawmakers have objected to the president’s carbon emissions rule for power plants, saying the move will hurt the endangered Florida manatees.

Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Rob Bishop (R-Utah), who oversee endangered species policy, wrote a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Monday, saying the warm water discharge of at least two coal-fired power plants in Florida are necessary to the manatees, and the marine mammal would suffer if the plants are closed.

Under the administration’s rule, coal plants are closed twice faster than otherwise planned.

“Clearly, power plants like Big Bend and Crystal River are critical to the survival of the manatee,” wrote the lawmakers, who chair the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee.

“A regulation that causes designated manatee refuges like Big Bend or Crystal River to shut down or alter their operations would significantly and adversely affect the endangered manatee,” the letter sid.

The Republican lawmakers’ pro-environment move against Democratic Obama cited the Endangered Species Act, against which they and the rest of the party had rallied once, according to the Hill.
