US toddler fatally shot himself with mother’s handgun

Marques Green, 3, fatally shot himself at his home near Cincinnati, Ohio, with his mother’s handgun, police said Friday.

A three-year-old American boy dies after shooting himself in the heart with his mother’s handgun in Ohio, according to police.

Marques Green fatally shot himself at his home near Cincinnati on Thursday evening, police said Friday.

He was playing with a semi-automatic gun, which his mother, Elizabeth Green, had been carrying around with her.

"My son just shot himself, and I'm not getting a pulse," the mother told police, according to a 911 audiotape release. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'm not getting a pulse ... I don't think he's alive!"

In the tape, released by Hamilton police, she is heard screaming, "The gun is mine. It is in the house, I carry it in my purse, I laid it down. We just got home."

“She was holding her son and he was lifeless, just completely lifeless," said a neighbor, Amanda Reed.

Elizabeth Green, dressed in white, is seen in the photo being comforted by police officers after her son fatally shot himself in Hamilton, Ohio.

Local prosecutors said they will take the case to a grand jury, probably next week. Green could probably face charges in her son's death.

A research, published online early this month by the journal Pediatrics Study, indicated that more than one in four American children are exposed to gun violence before reaching the age of 18 either as a victim or a witness.

“Millions of children are being exposed to violence involving weapons, and many of them are victimized by guns and knives, with an elevated risk of trauma and serious injury,” said lead study author Kimberly Mitchell, a scientist at the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire.

One in 33 American children falls victim to incidents involving guns or knives, according to the study.

Overall, the number of children exposed to violence involving weapons stands at 17.5 million, a number that surpasses that of children suffering from diabetes or cancer.

Many critics blame the notoriously liberal gun control laws in the US for the country’s high rate of gun violence.
