At least one person has reportedly been killed and six others injured in a bomb attack that struck a border town in Pakistan’s restive northwest, where the army is battling militants.

Officials said Friday that the bombing occurred near the Torkham border crossing in Pakistan’s Khyber tribal district near Afghanistan.

“The bomb killed one person and wounded six others, two of them seriously,” said Daftar Khan, a senior local administration official in the tribal area.

Other sources also confirmed the casualties at the main gate of the crossing, saying the blast came after the explosives on a pushcart were detonated remotely. The explosives were reportedly hidden among the goods that travelers ferry across the border.

People were stranded on both sides of the frontier as security officials were forced to seal the crossing after the incident.

Torkham crossing has been one of the main corridors used by NATO for supplying goods and ammunition to its forces in Afghanistan. It lies in Khyber, one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal districts of Pakistan.

The Pakistani army intensified its attacks on pro-Taliban militants in North Waziristan (NWA) tribal area last year, with the officials vowing to extend the campaign to other regions across the country.

Earlier in the day, security forces launched a raid on militants operating in Shawal Valley in North Waziristan, killing at least 25 suspected militants.

Pakistan claims that over 2,700 pro-Taliban militants have been killed in the intensified crackdown on the militants in NWA, although many say the huge operation has not been without difficulty as more than a million people have reportedly been displaced as a result of the intense fighting in the area.
