Two dead in Texas hospital shooting

Two elderly people are dead in a shooting at the Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos, Texas, police say.

A shooting incident at a medical center in San Marcos, Texas, has left two people dead, police say.

San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp said Tuesday the offender and one other person were dead in the shooting that happened in a private patient room in the Central Texas Medical Center, local media report.

The two dead were a husband and wife, ages 85 and 87 respectively, who were found by their daughter at around 7:49 a.m. in the wife's hospital room.

The two were declared dead at the scene, San Marcos Police spokeswoman Kristi Wyatt said in a news release.

Wyatt said police were investigating the shooting, but that there was no current threat to the public.

A hospital official said the shooting was an isolated incident in a private room and did not impact employees, other patients or visitors, according to local media.

“The situation is contained, and the police are actively investigating the scene with our assistance,” said Brad Russell, director of public relations at the medical center.

Authorities suspect the fatal shooting to be a murder-suicide.

The US averages 87 deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
