Retired football legend and former England international Sol Campbell seeks to become the next mayor of London.

Campbell, who will run under a Conservative banner, has said, “I’m going in with my eyes wide open. I know I’m not going to be a frontrunner.”

The British football legend, who won 73 England caps and played in three World Cups, told the Sun, “I look at people who have been in politics for five, 10, 15 years, and muck up, you see them muck up and think, 'You guys are supposed to be pro!'”

"People [who] have gone to Oxbridge, had thousands spent on their education, and I mean they are royally mucking up."

Campbell joined the Conservative party last year after criticizing Labour-proposed mansion tax, which would tax all homes over £2 million. The former footballer was in the running to stand in the general election, but was overlooked and replaced by Lady Victoria Borwick.

Campbell has come from a working class background and says he now wants to give something back. But some are critical of his decision to run for London mayor as he has very little if any experience in politics and is using his status to gain some leverage.

The favorites to get the candidacy in the Conservative party are Zac Goldsmith and Stephen Greenhalgh, but many feel Campbell's decision to leave his boyhood club Tottenham Hotspurs and join their rivals Arsenal in 2001 could lessen his popularity in North London.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Way Forward group said, "We are delighted that candidates like Sol Campbell are throwing their hat in the ring and coming to debate the future of London at our hustings on 4 July.”
