Press TV has conducted an interview with Alfred Lambremont Webre, an international lawyer in Vancouver, to discuss the deteriorating health condition of a Palestinian prisoner who is on hunger strike in protest at his administrative detention by the Israeli regime.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Mr. Webre, talk to us about the constant Israeli violations with regards to the Palestinians’ rights who are in administrative detention, who are facing severe conditions and are in dire need of medical attention, immediate medical attention rather.
Webre: Well this is very serious under international law. This is a per se blatant violation of convention IV of the Geneva Conventions. Under convention IV civilians are afforded the protections from inhumane treatment and attack afforded in the first convention to sick and wounded soldiers, meaning that they have to be protected against any assault upon personal dignity.
And there are additional regulations regarding the treatment of civilians. There are specific prohibitions against attacks on civilian hospitals, medical transports. One can say that the idea has gone out of their way to specifically target all civilians and to go out of their way to utterly disregard the standards of international humanitarian law under convention IV of the Geneva Conventions, making them intentional war criminals without any mitigating circumstances and this cannot go on forever. At some point there will be some legal reckoning against the … [regime] of Israel which has already been found to be a war crimes nation by the Kuala Lumpur War Crime Tribunal.
Press TV: Mr. Webre, this is surely an issue that Palestine can now put on the table of the ICC alongside all the other crimes and violations that the Israelis carry out on a daily basis against the Palestinians?
Webre: Indeed it is very difficult to understand what the rational of the Palestinians for not going forward to the ICC at this stage with fall legal cases, with fall international cases because these are blatant violations of convention IV of the Geneva Conventions against civilians by Israel with no mitigating circumstances.
