Washington Post reporter in Tehran stands trial over spying

Washington Post correspondent in Tehran Jason Rezaian

Washington Post’s correspondent in Tehran Jason Rezaian and two other people detained along with him have gone on trial in Iran on charges including spying.

Rezaian, together with his wife Yeganeh Salehi and a female press photographer, appeared in the Branch 15 of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Court on Tuesday, the IRNA news agency reported.

It is the first court hearing of Rezaian, a 39-year-old Iranian-American, who is facing charges of “espionage, collaboration with hostile governments, gathering classified information and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic,” according to his lawyer Leila Ahsan.

Rezaian, who holds a dual Iranian-American citizenship, has been The Post’s correspondent in Tehran since 2012.

His wife, an Iranian citizen, works as a correspondent for the National, a newspaper based in the United Arab Emirates. Salehi and the female photographer were released on bail in October 2014.
