Cavaliers beat Atlanta Hawks 97-89 in East finals game 1

The visiting Cleveland Cavaliers have won game 1 of their NBA Eastern Conference finals 97-89 against the Atlanta Hawks.

The hosts were the better side at the Philips Arena in the first quarter of the Wednesday game. They went up 20-12 through Jeff Teague’s jumper with four and a half minutes to go and sealed the frame 26-20.

LeBron James was quite handy for the visitors with his 31 points in the night. The four-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) leveled the game at 43 in the second quarter and the Cavaliers won the second quarter 31-25.

Yet, the two sides were tied at 51 at the intermission.

Cleveland started their lead from the third quarter and never looked back. J.R. Smith had two straight three-pointers late in the quarter to make it 71-63 to the Cavaliers. Smith had 28 points in a night when he drained 8 three point plays.

The away team led 74-67 when the third quarter finished. They even made it an 18 point game early in the last frame. Then it was the hosts who fought back and cut the deficit to 91-87 through Kent Bazemore with about a minute to go in regulation. But they could not get much closer and the Cavs had 6 of the game’s next 8 points and won 97-89.

Game 2 will also be played in Atlanta on May 23.
