A police officer has been shot by a suspect who remains at large in the eastern state of South Carolina.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a Berkeley County deputy was shot and injured late on Thursday night at a gas station.

The officer’s condition so far is not known and police have not given information about his name or the scope of his injuries to repeated inquiries by local media.

Several police agencies from across the state are conducting a search for the suspect of the shooting.

In Berkeley County, officials warned residents in the area to stay inside because they don’t know where the armed shooter is.

The search caused traffic in a major highway not far from where the incident happened as authorities investigated the incident.

An emergency helicopter could be scene hovering above the skies of South Carolina in the early morning hours of Friday looking for the suspect.

In the past week alone, at least 6 police officers were killed and more injured across the US as tensions between citizens and police officers have risen during the past weeks.

The number of killings by US police officers has increased in recent years, according to new official data, angering many Americans over brutality against minorities in the country mainly against black people.

The FBI’s account of justifiable homicides by police officers showed the number of deaths ranged from 397 to 426 each year since 2009 before jumping to 461 in 2013.

Two online groups, Fatal Encounters and Killed by Police, estimate that about 1,100 people died at the hands of police in 2014.
