Terrorism not to be restricted to Mideast if not stopped: Larijani

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani (R) speaks with Vice-President of the Czech Republic’s Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament Vojtěch Filip (L) during a meeting in Tehran, April 14, 2015.

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the activities of the terrorist groups operating in some Middle Eastern states will not be limited to the region if they are not contained by countries across the world.

“Today, we are witnessing that, unfortunately, terrorism and extremist activities have had a dangerous growth in the Middle East; they will not be confined to this region if not stopped by the international community,” Larijani said in a Tuesday meeting with Vice-President of the Czech Republic’s Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament Vojtěch Filip in Tehran.

Larijani also said that the European Union (EU) is able to help resolve tensions and crises in various countries by adopting an independent approach toward regional developments.

The top Iranian parliamentarian described the mutual ties between Tehran and Prague as good and historical, saying that the relations should be improved.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani said Iran is willing to develop inter-parliamentary relations and economic cooperation with the Czech Republic.

Filip, for his part, expressed satisfaction with his trip to Iran and discussions with Iranian officials, saying that the obstacles in the way of reinforcing mutual ties should be removed.

He said the Czech Republic supports the Islamic Republic’s constructive activates in fighting terrorism, and is opposed to illegal approaches such as airstrikes and providing terrorists with arms, in remarks apparently referring to the non-UN-sanctioned Saudi airstrikes against Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s airstrikes against Yemen started on March 26 in a bid to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Reports say close to 2,600 people have been killed and many more wounded in the Saudi attacks.
