A gathering took place in the Lebanese capital Beirut Monday to commemorate the 40TH anniversary of the start of the Lebanese civil war, under the slogan "Never again". Prominent figures from all religious factions showed support at the event, reminding Lebanese people of the negative effects of a civil war.The civil war lasted 15 bloody years from 1975 to 1990. It claimed the lives of more than 150,000 people and left another 17,000 missing.
The gathering was held in front of the national museum in Beirut which lies on the "green line". During the days of the war, this area was partitioned along a Muslim-Christian line, also known as East and West Beirut.
The country today is not very stable. The effects of the Syrian spillover and internal political bickering have brought renewed tension to Lebanon. However, religious figures stressed the importance of the new generation not to follow in the footsteps of a new war.
It's been forty years after the inception of the Lebanese civil war and people have come out to remember the days which once divided the Lebanese people. Regardless of all that's taking place in the country today, people have united here in Beirut promising to be united forever.
