Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has traveled to Moscow to seek support for the Palestinian statehood. During a meeting, Vladimir Putin and Mahmoud Abbas discussed key aspects of Russian-Palestinian relations, the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. Urgent situation in the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus’ suburb and political negotiations with Israel, which have been stalled for some time already, became the main themes of negotiations between the two leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin said it is necessary to consult on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as to exchange views on the situation in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Mahmoud Abbas noted that at the moment Palestine cares much about an ongoing Israeli settlement activity. This has caused a reaction from Israel to freeze the movement of funds. For the fourth month Palestine does not get the money.

An agreement on economic, trade and investment cooperation between Russia and Palestine can be described as almost or completely missing. Mahmoud Abbas said that Palestine is linked to the “Paris Protocol” and intends to cancel it in order to trade freely with Russia.

During his visit Palestinian President also met with Russian Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev and Russian Patriarch Kirill. He expressed solidarity with Orthodox Christians, who are celebrating Easter these days in both countries.

For many years Russia has been providing Palestinian people with charitable aid and has long recognized Palestine as an independent state. Two weeks ago in his address to the participants of the Arab League summit, Vladimir Putin made it clear that Kremlin, within the framework of the "middle East Quartet" and other channels, will continue to contribute to the creation of a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem al-Quds.
