Press TV has conducted an interview with Kaveh Afrasiabi, an author and political scientist based in Boston, to discuss US President Barack Obama’s recent remarks about a potential agreement between Iran and six world powers.

Afrasiabi says that the initial understanding between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries specifically maintains that an immediate termination of all anti-Iran sanctions is necessary for reaching a deal. The gradual phasing out of the sanctions is Washington’s own interpretation of a joint statement issued at the end of the latest round of Iran-P5+1 talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne, he adds.

The analyst says Obama’s approach toward a deal with Iran is inconsistent, since he first suggests a gradual phasing out of sanctions - which is itself not acceptable to Iran - and then brings up the future possibility of sanctions snapping back to their active state, which renders phasing them out meaningless.

In conclusion, Afrasiabi says that some members of the US Congress and the American pro-Israeli lobby have teamed up to torpedo an agreement with Iran through psychological warfare, and this is a “game of political chicanery” that the White House needs to steer clear of.
