Almost 30,000 people have been evacuated in the southern Chinese province of Fujian as a massive chemical oil fire reignited, reports say.

"A total of 29,096 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area," China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said late Wednesday.

The blaze at the factory producing Paraxylene - a chemical commonly known as PX and used in polyester and plastics manufacturing - began on Monday evening when an oil leak caught fire and led to blasts at three nearby oil storage tanks at the Tenglong Aromatic Hydrocarbon plant in Zhangzhou.

According to firefighter officials, the fire was first put out on Tuesday night, but two storage tanks ignited again on Wednesday; the flames were finally extinguished in the early hours of Thursday.

At least 14 people, including four firefighters, have been injured in the explosion and subsequent fire at a chemical plant in China’s eastern city of Zhangzhou in Fujian Province.

Television footage earlier this week showed flames billowing into the air as more than 800 firefighters with 170 fire engines battled to control the blaze.
