Saudi Arabia has welcomed a recent joint statement by Iran and the P5+1 group on Tehran’s nuclear program, expressing hope that the mutual understanding would pave the way for a final agreement.
Saudi Arabia’s cabinet on Monday issued a statement welcoming the recent joint statement adopted by Iran and the six countries, expressing hope that the solutions found would result in a permanent deal on Tehran’s nuclear activities.
“The council of ministers expressed hope for attaining a binding and definitive agreement that would lead to the strengthening of security and stability in the region and the world,” the statement said, according to the state-owned Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Iran and P5+1 group of countries – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany -- along with officials from the European Union finally reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program after eight days of marathon talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne on Thursday.
The two sides are expected to start drafting a final accord on the issue which is expected to come until the end of June 2015.
The Saudi statement comes against the backdrop of repeated efforts by Riyadh in the past aimed at casting doubt on the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. Some Saudi officials have even claimed that Iran’s activities in the field could intensify the arms race in the region.
Many countries and international organizations have hailed the Iran-P5+1 statement, with some calling it a big victory for proponents of diplomacy across the world. However, the mutual understanding has infuriated Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heavily criticizing it.
