7 million tuned in for the first of the TV debates and it’s the only time Ed Miliband and David Cameron will be head to head on TV, before the general election in May. But with 5 other candidates joining the fray we asked the public who they thought fared best.

The major Yougov poll suggested Nicola Sturgeon won the debate on the night, with Nigel Farage second. Critics argue the success of Sturgeon and Farage show a change in the nature of British politics and the potential decline of the traditional two party system. However Farage was criticized for some of his remarks and was even told he ought to be ashamed of himself for deploying scare mongering rhetoric.
With just over a month left till the general election this debate is just the beginning of a possible new dynamic in the UK vote.
