Dozens of memorial and commemorations events were held all across Argentina to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Malvinas war. April 2nd is observed as a national holiday to honor and pay tribute to those 649 Argentine soldiers who gave their lives fighting the British occupation of the South Atlantic territories back in 1982.
Countless war crimes at the hands of the UK were reported by the soldiers and many wounds remain open for the war veterans who, now from the distance, still fight for the sovereignty of that part of the Argentine territory.
These memorial events come amid mounting tensions with London after the British Defense Secretary announced just days ago that the UK will beef up its military presence in the islands and will spend about $ 350 million to deploy next-generation weapons in the archipelago. Many veterans regarded that move as an imperialist provocation.
President Cristina Kirchner addressed the country on national television with a heartfelt speech in which not only blasted the British allegations that Argentina possess a "live threat" to the UK but also demanded London to sit at the negotiating table as urged by many UN General Assembly resolutions.
Earlier this week the Foreign Ministry filed a complaint with the UN to denounce Britain for boosting its military presence in Malvinas. The complaint accuses the UK of warmongering and acting like a colonial power over the islands.
