Buenos Aires and most Argentinean major cities looked deserted as the main labor unions held a 24-hour nationwide general strike that shut down the transportation system and brought the country to a halt. Workers protested what they consider an excessive income tax rate on their salaries and an unbridled inflation. According to them the tax burden must be shifted from workers to big corporations.
Government officials hit out at protest organizers saying the unions are to blame for their industrial action paralyzed the country.
Even though workers’ salaries have grown above and beyond the inflation rate over the past 8 years, this is the 4th general strike since President Kirchner took office in 2007.
According to analysts, most of the people share the standpoint of the government and say the protest was organized by the very small number of laborers subjected to the income tax. Meanwhile union leaders threatened to stage a 36 hours strike in April if the government doesn’t meet their demands.
