Unemployment 'increases' in six EU countries

A huge number of EU citizens are still struggling from the various problems associated with unemployment. The year-on-year jobless rate has increased in six EU countries most notably in Croatia, Cyprus and Finland. Overall, however, the unemployment total in the bloc decreased slightly in the one month period from January to February.

According to figures just published by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, there are 23.8 million unemployed adults in the 28-member bloc, 18.2 million of whom live in the eurozone. Greece has the highest unemployment rate at 26% followed by Spain at 23%. There are 4.8 million young adults under the age of 25 who are not in work or education.

The European Commission is trying to gather €315bn from EU member states to fund a jobs initiative. However, the target is not yet even close to being reached. The social consequences of the unemployment crisis are enormous. Suicide is s major problem in the EU as millions of people continue to live in poverty.

Firms in the 19 member eurozone lack confidence because consumer spending has plummeted since the start of the economic crisis in 2008. As a result businesses are not expanding and creating jobs. There are now more people in the eurozone who are categorised as long-term unemployed than ever before.
