13 stand trial in Spain’s ruling party corruption scandal

Thirteen people stood trial in Madrid for their involvement in the Gürtel case, a kickbacks-for-contracts scheme that has plagued Spain’s ruling Popular Party.
Amongst the accused stand Francisco Correa, the mastermind behind the clientelistic network.
The judge, Pablo Ruz has also found that the Popular Party ran a secret slush fund for 18 years. The man in charge of administering the party’s funds was Luis Bárcenas, the party’s ex-treasurer. The Popular Party has completely disassociated Bárcenas from the party and attributes responsibility solely to him.
In turn, Bárcenas’s lawyer alleged this week that it is in fact the party leaders who are to blame for the party’s administration.
The notorious corruption scandal bites the Popular Party once again, putting them in the spotlight just two months before elections are to take place. Over six years have passed since the case was revealed and only now are its main culprits being put on trial.
